A DUTIFUL WOMAN | 2021
De Ferrer’s photographic series is inspired by a set of 1920s portraits capturing her great-grandmother on her wedding day. The artist describes her great-grandmother as a formidable woman, yet when seen through the lens, she appears passive —a ‘something’ rather than a ‘someone’. De Ferrer explores the concept of female identity through the lens of the male gaze. Using traditional household textiles such as tablecloths and lace to conceal a lone figure, she demonstrates the continued subjugation of women. De Ferrer has drawn inspiration from her family archives to remind us that the female image is still contorted and diminished within contemporary art.
