Ziqing He’s installation depicts a wounded figure crafted from waste paper and wooden slats. The figure is covered with photographs of injured body parts — a result of family violence. He references the doll to depict the power struggles of a child stuck within a damaging family dynamic. Inspired by a classmate’s experience, He draws light on how the intensely personal experience of domestic violence is in fact a political issue. The visceral artwork suggests that the ‘weaker’ individual is treated like waste. Through the installation, the artist wishes to raise awareness about domestic violence.
